Today I changed some plans last minute (it happens sometimes!) so 1st and 3rd period did two different things.
Period 1 - Today you did a small characterization activity in which you selected some character traits for Grant in ALBD and provided some reasoning behind your choices. We discussed some major themes in the book (racial inequality and injustice, the importance of education, the power of redemption, and freedom as a state of mind) as well as character motivations, and also read and discussed Marva Collins' "Creed." What sort of connections can you make between the creed and the novel?
Period 3 - Today we also discussed the major themes in the novel (see above) and connected them, as well as characters in the novel, to Marva Collins' "Creed." We discussed the difference between Fatalism and Individualism, and how some characters represented or embodied these opposing schools of thought. We also examined some song lyrics for three songs, "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (classic, awesome old-school hip hop for those of you who arent familiar,) "Inner City Blues" by Marvin Gaye, and "Strange Fruit" by Bille Holiday. We didn't quite get to finish our discussion, so we will continue on Wednesday.
No homework tonight... see you tomorrow! We will be spending some time in the computer lab going over blog stuff. =)
