To supplement our reading of The Beach, we have discussed the qualities of both utopian and dystopian societies. Visit the two links below. Explore the Dubai website, making sure to view the video gallery. Read the article and view the video segment regarding Denmark. Post your responses here.
What utopian qualities are found in Dubai? How about Denmark? Are they realistic? Close to actual utopias? Why or why not? What connections can you make between these real-life examples and what is reflected in the novel so far? Explain in a 3-5 paragraph response that uses quotes from both sources. A Utopia is a place of perfection, the ideal place to live. In a utopia you would have a perfect civilization without the evils of society such as poverty and unhappiness, and who wouldn’t want to go to that perfect get away or even live in this Utopia! When you travel or go on vacation most people look for that get away, a place to relax, “The World” and Denmark both try to become the Utopia in which everyone searches for.
ReplyDelete“The World” located in Dubai tries to create the ideal utopia by creating man made islands, when looking down upon these islands from the sky it looks like the world. “You will find a fascinating mix of nationalities in Dubai — a melting pot of cultures — whatever your tastes or interests, you will find them in Dubai.” Dubai is even known as the ‘The City of Gold', ‘The City of Lights, or The City of Records.” “The World” lives by 7 Principles, the first, Bespoke, they believe that the islands are like a blank canvas and all we have to do is help them create our own paradise. The second principle is grand, this is about going big making your dreams become reality. The third is rare, this is about this place being unique and being so uncommon that it pulls at the heart. The fourth principle is visceral; they believe this place should be a thrill that makes you weak at the knees. The fifth principle is intelligence, it takes intelligence to make something perfect and beautiful without intelligence “the world would not go round”. The sixth principle is magical because the experience you will have at “the World” is unexpected. The seventh and last principle is legacy; this is a place where all great things come together. I think that the Utopia in which “The World” tries to make is realistic, but in order to make this a real utopia you would have to have a perfect society which has nothing to do with the makers of “the world” but the people coming to visit or live there.
Denmark is considered the happiest place on earth, although Denmark has some of the highest taxes (50-70% of their incomes) but in exchange the government pays for all health care and education, and spends more on children and elderly. Some qualities of a utopia in Denmark are they live there life under ‘Jante-lov,” which means that you are no better than anyone else. So for example when picking a career you would pick something that you love to do, not based on how much money you make but because you love it and everyone makes the same amount of money. Another utopia quality is that everyone has enough money for cars but they decide to ride bikes, in America people buy nice cars because it shows how much money they have, or they want to show it off, in Denmark everyone can afford a car but they decide to make the healthier decision and ride a bike.
Although Denmark may not be perfect it gives the people a great opportunity to be happy in what they do for a living, the time spent with their families and everyone is treated equally. I think the qualities are realistic but I don’t think it makes Denmark a utopia, although the society gives off the perfect society vibe, I don’t think that it is, like every other place in the world we are faced with problems.
So far in the novel The Beach, Richard has just been in Thailand for only a few days and already in the place he is staying; next door a crazy man kills himself. In the Book Thailand doesn’t not seem like the ideal utopia but more like a dystopia, but the crazy man who killed himself left Richard a map to “The Beach” maybe when Richard arrives there he will find a Utopia.
-Ashley Millar
A utopia is characterized as the perfect world. Utopia is where you would want to live with an ideal society where everyone is happy. In Dubai they have created their version of a utopia off their coast. It is a group of islands that have been created with a plan set up for transportation, living standards, and shopping.
ReplyDelete"The World", the island community in Dubai, has set areas for low and high density living, resorts and corporate business. With year round sunshine and private beaches and marinas this is what many would consider their "utopia".
Denmark is another version of a said "utopia". Social scientists have been studying countries all around the world for over a decade and have come up with some surprising results. While here in the US we might think that we are the happiest considering our wealth and military standing. Yet the US actually came in number 23.
Number one went to Denmark. Even though they pay outragous taxes, they are completey taken care of by their government with health care and education. They trust each other and use the "honor" system. Another reason why people think Danes are so happy is because they have a view that no one person is better than another.
While Dubai and Denmark are two very different locations, they do have some very similar qualities. Opportunity is huge in both places. Dubai is just getting started with "The World" but it could be the first of many "utopias" to come. In Denmark, opportunity comes in the form of equality. While here in the US certain professions are looked down upon, in Denamrk everyone works together to help their community. Either counrty could be seen as a utopia, it just depends on what your version of the perfect society would be.
Everyone wants to have or experience Utopia once in their life. What is Utopia? Utopia is ideal place to live. In Utopia you have the perfect civilizations, government and no problems just peace. Most people in the world want to travel to a place where you have utopia. As, Demark and “The World’, both try and achieve utopia.
ReplyDelete“The World’’ is a place of beauty, money located in Dubai. By creating man made islands to create and look like the world. When visiting “The World’’, ‘’you will find a mix of different nationalities ‘’ and all around happy people. As the creators of “The World” they describe it as ‘’The City of Gold’’. Dubai lives by the seven principals. The first is Bespoke noting that each island is a blank canvas it’s yours to make your own. Second is grand making everything your own? The way you like it. Third, is rare having everything unique and not what you see every day. Fourth is visceral meaning they want you to be shocked at what you see. Fifth is intelligence they want you to be proud of what they made for you. Sixth magical they want you to experience nothing like what you have before and last seventh is legacy where they want you to come back and remember what they built. Each part of the world attempts to create a perfect utopia which they did. Unlike “The World’’, Denmark is ‘’The Happiest Place on Earth. They try to make the best of each situation that comes their way. Even if they have the highest incomes in the world, but it pays off they take 50 to 70% of your income to pay for your health care and spends most of it on the children. There are some qualities of utopia in Denmark. They live under the ‘’Jante- lov’’, which means that each person is the same and treated how you would want to be treated. Let’s say you picked a job that doesn’t get that much money, but everyone in Denmark would be happy for you and support you. Another part of them being utopia is that everyone has enough money to pay for cars, bikes etc.. they all can afford what they would like.
Even if Denmark doesn’t have as much money as “The World’’ does they try to make everyone happy and part of the country. People may not have all the money in the world, but they make it seem like they do. Everyone is nice to each other. “The World’’ makes you feel like you have never been to this kind of place before. In other words, they make you feel special likes it’s you birthday everyday of the year. Everyone is nice to each other.
So far in the novel that we are reading in class, Richard is in Thailand. He is already experiencing a lot of conflict. He is saying to himself that the person next door to me is crazy and killing himself. Not every situation you put yourself in is not utopia it becomes it when you make it a utopia.

There are many Utopian qualities found in Dubai. The World made fantasy into reality. Things you could only dream of became true in the islands of Dubai. There is sunshine found year round, travel time is optimized, water ways get you to your next destination as quickly as possible, investors can turn their dreams into reality by building whatever they would like, everything is made easily accessible, each island has private marinas and beaches, and everything meets the needs of the residents. In Denmark everyone seems to be happy. They may have high taxes but the government pays back by paying for education, health care, and spends a lot of money on children and the elderly.
I think Dubai does not seem realistic. It does not seem realistic because everything there is very expensive and for anyone to live in that perfect world, you would have to have no budget and be able to spend as much money as you want. It does seem like the perfect place to live; it has sunshine year round, it’s located in the ocean and everything meets the needs of the residents, but in order for you to afford your plane ticket and hotel over to Dubai, you would have to have a very high paying job. Denmark, being the happiest place on earth, does seem more realistic than Dubai. They all are very happy in Denmark according to the studies done, and they live a more realistic and middle class life, like most people do. This utopian world seems more realistic because they live a normal life, ride their bikes everywhere, gather with friends, and don’t judge anyone based on their job. This would be a more affordable place to live than Dubai would be.
In the novel so far, Vietnam does not seem like a utopia at all. So far Richard has only been in Vietnam for a night and so far a man has already killed himself. People stay up all night and aren’t very respectful of the thin walls the hostel has. The Ko Sanh road is described as dirty also. So far the novel does not seem to be described as a utopian society at all.
People may think that Dubai is a utopia because of its great facilities, amazing beaches, halfway isolated from the crazy life or the ocean but its not a utopia. A utopia is a perfect place and nowhere is perfect. i dnt really believe in utopias because how can something be so good? everywhere has big problems and it will not always make you happy.
ReplyDeleteIn denmark the people are what makes everything so good. Their mindset and friendliness makes everyone happy all the time. Even in the film it says that its cold and rainy all the time so it has to be the people that make the people so happy. people make the biggest impact on others because when a person is down it will rub off on you and if they are happy everyones spirits will be lifted.
In the book it seems that Thailand is a huge dystopia because its absolutely crazy and dirty and the guy next door killed himself but i think that once he arrives at "The Beach" he might find something more like a utopia.
Dubai is a utopia; they call it the world and is suppose to be the greatest place to be. Everything is perfect. Everything is ideal. Year round sunshine and private beaches and marinas. Dubai is “an island paradise of sea, sand, and sky…” You can also buy islands and shape them to how you would like. Absolute privacy. Perfecting paradise. Denmark is a utopia because, they’re just happy, and most are equal. No worries. They don’t get judged if they’re rich or poor. Everyone is just nice to and friendly to each other. There are also considered the happiest people alive. What’s more utopian than that?
ReplyDeleteYes I believe they are both realistic, if they really make it work. If they’re happy and they think everything is perfect then it would be a utopia. Perfect can mean different things to different people so it just depends on what your thoughts of a perfect place are. I think neither of them is close to actual utopias because if you look at what Dubai is trying to create there would probably many problems. And Denmark is far from a utopia because it’s just not 100% perfect. A utopia is defined as: an ideally perfect place, especially in its social, political, and moral aspects. And that’s just not all completely there yet.
I can connect these real life places to the novel, because everyone is looking for and expecting happiness. In the novel there are people who travel to find a place where they are at ease and in total bliss. And in these real world places its exactly the same. They live there wanting happiness and just a good life. No problems. And those places are where they can escape to from the real world
A utopia is the idea of a perfect world. I think that this is a good idea because people can live without the evils of the world, and if it is possible, then we are well on our way with Dubai and Denmark. They are close because they are trying to create a world that they can self-sustain. I still think that it is not possible to create a world without flaws. A dystopia is the exact opposite of a utopia. This would be like a place where there is nothing but bad things in it. There are very real places like that now like places in the 3rd world. Anyways, people think that they can make a perfect world, but in my opinion, as long as it has humans in it, it will never be perfect because humans are not.
ReplyDeleteUtopia and Dystopia are seen different by evrybody in their own different way. To me Utopia is a like a getaway from everything that could harm you or put you in danger. Dystopia to me is like being a step lower in life than where you were before.
ReplyDeleteUtopia was shown in both "The World" and "Denmark" videos. "The World" shows how a vacation spot can be peaceful and belong to you with out the fear of being harmed or messed with. Denmark is also a kind of Utopia. Sure the weather is awful and it gets very cold, but the attitude of the people is positive no matter what the circumstance. For example, the so called "Prince of Denmark" wants to be the apprentice of a carpenter and is fine with leaving royalty behind. This is a great example of Utopia because he and his people feel that there aren't any problems that are shown or felt, that need to be expressed.
To most people, Dystopia is a hell like state in which chaos and devistation is present. To me, Dystopia is like this but within a person. It isn't a place, it's a state of mind. "The World" and "Denmark" videos didn't display one Dystopiac gesture or meaning to me in anyway. People have to feel like they hit the worst part of their life and unleash that feeling to the world for anything to be in dystopia. Mayube "The World" is supposed to be there to relive these kind of feelings, but not anything else.
Utopia and Dystopia are a part of this world that can't go unknown, but they can be thought about and challenged in the minds of the people.
The utopian qualities of Dubai would be everyone would be happy when they are vacationing and when they are at their house in the island made only especially for them. There are also the luxuries of having many places to go to and going where you want to where no one could bother you. The bad thing about Dubai that wouldn’t make it a utopia would be the system. It might be too expensive or too cheap. If its too cheap they would all be sold out real fast without having other people get the chance to buy it, since they would be sold out it wouldn’t be a utopia because there isn’t enough space for everyone to have a spot. If its too expensive it will only be available to millionaires or maybe even billionaires not anyone from a lower class that would want one. I would say Dubai is not a utopia because if you have to buy happiness or perfection in something that itself doesn’t make it a utopia.
ReplyDeleteJust because Denmark is one of the happiest places on earth does not in whatever way mean it’s a utopia. When your really happy somewhere your just happy its not a utopia or its not paradise, everything in the world or everything that exists has its flaws. Even if it’s the happiest place on earth that might only be because people are friendly. I really doubt everyone in Denmark enjoys working to live, if not that I also doubt even if you don’t work so much you still have to work and work doesn’t bring happiness. Even if its for one person that doesn’t make it a utopia. When it’s a utopia everyone is happy, and everything is peaceful. Which is why It makes Denmark the happiest place on earth, but not a utopia. So, to conclude Denmark Is definitely not a utopia. Yes it has the most people on the earth who are happy but the most. Not all of them are happy.
Its true a Utopia is a paradise its an ideal idea, plot, dream, and many other things to different people. In my opinion it is physically impossible to have a utopia because sometimes there is always something wrong, someone who isn’t happy, someone who complains or think their being treated unfairly or not good enough. There is always problems in every community whether it be as small as a simple joke you take too serious. Or even a unforgivable accidental crime, maybe crashing a car, or something like that. A utopia is only a vision, a dream for some people maybe even more this is exactly what I think about utopias. To conclude nothing is perfect and everything has flaw thats what makes everything the way it is.
There are many utopian qualities found in Dubai. There, people can enjoy year round sunshine, fine dining and a large variety of shopping. The World has a very controlled way of transportation. There are controlled transportation hubs and controlled canals. There are also density types of islands.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, Denmark doesn’t have any of this. The utopian view comes from the people rather than the environment. People from Denmark trust each other as well as their government. People do not judge other people. Also the government pays for healthcare and education. Also people do not choose careers based on income or status.
I think these are realistic in Denmark but not in Dubai. I believe that no place can be an absolute utopia. In Dubai, the environment is near perfect but the people could possibly pose a problem. I believe that the presence of many humans in an area will cause dystopic behavior. In Denmark the people are good but the environment is not too good. The weather is cold and rainy.
In Bangkok, the environment is not very good. This could mean that the people are good.

The definition of utopia is the idea of ultimate perfection in every aspect of life. Through the creation of “The World” in Dubai, this goal of utopia is trying to be met. “The luxury lifestyle that Dubai offers is perfect for the discerning tourist” as said by the article. The World is the ideal utopia; the closest form of perfection on earth. Though it is not the absolute utopia, Dubai is trying it’s best to come as close as possible to reaching that goal. Living in Dubai, or The World, creates an atmosphere of the dream lifestyle that every human dreams of. “You will find a fascinating mix of nationalities in Dubai — a melting pot of cultures — whatever your tastes or interests, you will find them in Dubai.” From the unlimited shopping sprees to the sporting events and a broadened variety in food and restaurants, all are aspects of the escapism people crave and the utopia people dream of. Though Dubai is trying to complete the task of creating the perfect world, I believe that not all can be perfect or reach the point of perfection, but may come really close, and in doing that still reaches a form of utopia that makes people and travelers satisfied.
ReplyDeleteOut of all seven continents, Denmark is considered as the happiest place on earth. Though their taxes add up to about 50 to 70 percent of their paychecks, the Danes are being completely covered by their government in both health care and education; two necessities in life people can’t afford to live without. Denmark can be considered as a very happy place and a way to live an optimistic lifestyle. “’They have this thing called 'Jante-lov,' which essentially says, 'You're no better then anybody else,'’... A garbage man can live in a middle-class neighborhood and hold his head high.’” This is very close to the utopian lifestyle, seeing that nobody is considered as lower than the next, creating a diversified selection of human life, and a set up for the ultimate happiness. Though it is, per say, the happiest place to live, it is still an imperfection at its finest. People are never completely satisfied and not everything works out perfectly, no matter the conditions or circumstances being lived in.
In the book The Beach, Richard is traveling through the chaotic, unusual country of Thailand, and it is shown in different ways that Thailand could be considered as the opposite of utopia, otherwise known as dystopia. From the suicide to the way the police handle the situation all show how imperfect Thailand is and how it creates depressing, almost horrible circumstances to live in. It is definitely opposite to the lifestyles Dubai and Denmark are trying to create in that Thailand shows, in every way, the imperfections in life while the other two (Dubai and Denmark) are trying to do everything in their power to get away and grow from the imperfections.
-Karissa Moody
The utopian qualities of Dubai are shaping into a paradise with no worries, no traffic problems, and little pollution. The World is also being described as a get away form everyday life, a place where you can live for as long as you want it you could, and luxury on every island with white sand and private marinas. Denmark on the other hand is cold and rainy, but it is still the happiest place on Earth. This is because they believe that nobody is better than anyone else, and no one judges on the choice of career someone has. They are just one big family working together.
ReplyDeleteI think that Denmark is more of a utopia than The World is going to be because it doesn’t matter about luxury, or your own private little island. It’s about being around a place that makes you feel good about yourself, no matter what position you are in. It also depends on who your family is. Luxury doesn’t fill in the missing link to have a perfect world. Utopia is about people being courteous to one another. It doesn’t matter if you have white beaches with the sun year round, and your own private marina. That is why I think The World of Dubai is going to become a dystopia instead of being the first and only utopia.
One connection to this and the book is that in the book people are looking for a utopia, and so are the people who are building The World into what they think its going to be. Another connection is that traveling is a get away from your everyday life, and The World is suppose to be a get away from everyday life as well.

Dubai is a place for relaxation and to escape from the world into a world of just paradise. It will be a utopia for most people depending where they come from. People think utopia is the dream land and I personally think that who ever created “the world” is brilliant. This will be one place that tourists from all over and can come together in such a beautiful place such as Dubai. Denmark on the other hand if in a totally different place and has different qualities. It all comes down to the traveler, where they want to go and if they love the heat or the cold. They both are realistic in some cases, maybe neither place has the perfect creation of a utopia.
ReplyDeleteUtopia is mainly all in the thoughts of the traveler. I don’t think there is an actual utopia, something close to it yes but not the real deal. But at the same time people have to have every thing perfectly and exactly what they want to be a utopia, there is a down fall to everything even in our thoughts. Paradise and utopia have two different meanings. Paradise is a beautiful place to go for a vacation or just to visit. Utopia is the one destination that people seek for but can’t ever find. They just find paradise.
In the novel all these travelers are looking for the utopia but where they go is almost like they are back home but with really crappy places to sleep. Ko Sanh road is like the big city. The beach they are searching for is supposedly a utopia but how would they know? Richard might have killed himself because he looked so long for a utopia but never found it so it’s like there is no such thing. That was his way of telling this stranger that maybe his perspective of a utopia is different from others, and to go to the beach to see what the main character thinks of it. Different people have different thoughts and different images of what a utopia looks like.
A utopia is a perfect world and no matter how hard we try to creat a utopia we never will. Even though Dubai has amazing beaches and sunshine year around it is not a utopia. It is not realistic. There will always be something wrong with it, even if it is a small problem. Denmark is the same way. Even though the people say that they are happy with there life there will always be something better and there will always be something that they will want.
ReplyDeleteThailand is far from a utopia. It is more like a dystopia; the exact opposite from a utopia. The streets are crowded, the hotels are cheap, and some of the people are crazy. If this was a utopia none of this would be happening. The real world is the same way. Nothing is perfect and nothing will ever be perfect no matter how hard we try. There will always be something better then what we have and we will always have our problems.
Blog Assignment # 2: Utopia and Dystopia
ReplyDeleteKeeley Drozda
Utopia is basically what you would want in a country. It means happiness, being wealthy, taken good care of by the government, and living in paradise. It’s a fantasy land for all of us. There is no evil, no selfishness or greediness, and no one is homeless. That would be called dystopia, if the society were to be unhappy and miserable.
Some of the utopian qualities found in Dubai are that the creator of the islands can make their own rules, and what they think would be the best for their private island. Its sunshine year round and everything is tropical. In Denmark, though, it is cold, rainy, and taxes are 50% or more. In return, the government covers all health care and education, and spends more on children and the elderly than any country in the world per capita. Most people rank their happiness scale (in their lifetime) around a “9”.
These countries are both really different from all the other countries out there. Maybe they found the right way to treat their people, even though it may seem miserable and not right! They are close to actual utopias because the people are extremely happy. Denmark may not be a good example of paradise on a beach, but the way they live is no complaint.
In the book ‘The Beach’ by Alex Garland, they quote “The Ko Sanh Road was backpacker land. Almost all the buildings had been converted to guest houses, there were long-distance telephone booths with air-con, the cafes showed brand-new Hollywood films on video, and you couldn’t walk ten feet without passing a bootleg tape stall”(pg.5). Bangkok (where the beach was) seemed to be a land of paradise, where nobody spoke of, a secretive island that people wanted to explore. Nothing ever changed there. But in the articles of Denmark and The World, everyone is absolutely satisfied with what they’re living with. “With just 5.5 million people, the system is efficient, and the people feel “tryghed”- the Danish word for “tucked in” – like a snug child.” proves that these people are just simply happy.
There is not really dystopian features in all the three places mentioned (Denmark, The World, and Bangkok). Besides the sketchiness of the beach, everyone is truly satisfied with what they are living with at the moment. So, there really are paradise lands out there.
A utopia is the place everyone wants to be. Perfect, no problems the way most people would enjoy living. "The World" near Dubai has attempted to create this fantasy. It's a place to escape, relax, and forget. But it's the same case in Denmark. But this wasn't created by men. Denmark is considered one of the happiest places on Earth. Well if everyone in America were kind, respectful and responsible we'd be happy too. But a dystopia is the exact opposite. Hell in another words. Take Iraq for example. I'd consider that a dystopia. A war is taking place and not to mention it's not the richest country in the world. Everyone has poverty but Iraq is worse than some.So far in Alex Gardner's "The Beach" I believe Richard the main character is in a dystopia. In reality I can say there's a place for escaping but not a chance with utopia. At least not a real one today. "The World" is a man-made mess waiting to happen.
ReplyDeleteBoth "The World" and Denmark can be utopias to the right people. I think The World is more of a utopia because it is an extreme escape from the realty world and offers something so vastly different from most people’s lives. For "the World being a realistic utopias I would say no, with more extreme escapism comes a heavier price. Yes some will be able to buy, visit, and adventure to these islands but not without making a big dent in their savings. I would say that "The World" relates to the book "the Beach" only because traveling in general is a form of escape.
ReplyDeleteDenmark seems to have some traits of a utopia. I see Denmark as more of a utopia that is a state of mind. The people are created equal so that there is no un friendly competition. Denmark is only a realistic utopia to those who live there and agree to think that they are in a utopia.
Dubai has many utopian ideas and qualities. It was created to help people make an ideal and self sustained world. Which is alot like utopia. Denmark is just overall very happy and the people try their best to be happy to make other people happy. They are happy with pretty much everything, and are always trying to make each other happy. They are pretty close to being a utopia. Dubai is trying to create a utopia and are coming very close, but there are always gonna be some altercations and problems with something. So they haven't quite created a utopia. Same goes for Denmark no matter how happy they are they are gonna be problems big or small.
ReplyDeleteA Utopia, is supposed to be perfect. Not just for everyone, but for the individual, i could see where i am now as perfect, and going to school, and doing work could be my utopia. If someones sees beautiful views, and pretty islands and beaches and sunsets as their Utopia, then Dubai would be the perfect place for them. it would be their Utopia. In Denmark, which is "the happiest place on Earth" people are always happy, no matter if they are a garbage man, a craftsman, or a prince. everyones happy where they are at, and they have no problem with where they are. i see Denmark as a Utopia, not because of the surroundings, or the enviroment, but because people are happy, if everyones happy, then it must be a perfect place to be.
ReplyDeleteDenmark and Dubai are both Utopias, but in my opinion, to different people. Utopias honestly depend on your view of "Perfection" In Denmark, everyone is happy, and "perfect" but in Dubai, everything seems to be happy, and beautiful, and everything will work out in unison and it will be "perfect". so i believe the yes, they are both very close to being Utopias, but it also depends on your view, again, of "Perfecton".
I can make connections from these real-life examples and those in the novel, because in the novel, the characters are in search of something like a Utopia. They may not know it, or admit it, but they both are, they both want to find perfection, and in whole find themselves. THe map that was left from the mans death imposed an adventure to Robert, the whole mystery of it, and the question about this "Beach" Mr. Duck was talking about. he wants to know more, and find this place, weither it be a Utopia or not.
_TRAVIS JENKS_
The utopian Qualities found in Dubai are many. You are basically living in a world that is away from everyday life. You can just relax and enjoy life without having to worry about anything because you are not connected to the other countries. You don’t have to deal with the problems that the world is facing. You also get the nicest stuff all the time. In Denmark there utopian qualities are a little different but still very good. People actually enjoy working rather than complaining all the time. People trust one another with everything so they don’t have to worry as much. They can just live their lives much easier because they know everything will be taken care of and no one will complain or not do it.
ReplyDeleteThese are very realistic because they actually exist. Denmark has been a utopian society for a while. And although the utopia in Dubai isn’t finished yet, it is very realistic because they have it all planned out, and have started the construction. “Many people rated themselves at least an eight, and there were several nines and 10s” This was said in a survey in Denmark, so this means that it is very realistic, because it’s a real thing. They have to pay a little more in taxes which makes it worse, but as said in the document “the government covers all health care and education, and spends more on children and the elderly than any country in the world per capita” so they owe about the same amount.
Both of these places are utopias, but they are utopian in different in ways. Denmark is an actual country that has been around for a very long time; while “the World” is a man made place that is specifically being made to form a utopia. Both offer an escape from the problems from the world which everyone wishes they could go to.
Utopias are non existent in the first place, but there are places close to achieving the goal of a perfect society. The society in Dubai is a great start along with Denmark and both of them are on the right path. The society in Dubai and Denmark each have good aspects such as the system for water and power, but the cost and the supply of energy is not limitless which does not allow the society to be perfect.
ReplyDeleteIn the Beach, The Beach they are trying to find is considered the best place in the world. In the real life versions of utopia they are trying to create a society like that of the beach. They are attempting to create a society away from society and the normality. This is expressed well in Dubai by the islands being in the ocean and how there is no real problems involved with in the system.
The utopian quality found in Dubai is a place that is built to be these perfect islands. It will not last because you can’t make a perfect society and if you do they won’t be happy. Dubai is trying to make something that will not happen. When Denmark is a place that’s hot trying to be perfect everyone there is already happy with what they are doing. Denmark well most likely last because they aren’t trying to be a perfect society that just how they are. As long as nothing changes the way it is it will last.
ReplyDeleteThe beach is a society more like Denmark because they aren’t trying to be perfect. But the pot field that’s on the island will probley change how that is. The weed is changing how the island naturally is. Just like if something would change in denmark.
In Dubai, people can enjoy year round luxurey, great sunshine, and a large variety of great food. There are many utopian qualities found in Dubai. The World has a very controlled way of transportation. The world allows for liitle ways to get around mostly by car, Dubai will allow it by canals for boats. There will also be different types of ilands.
ReplyDeleteUtopian comes from the people rather than the environment, although the enviorment mu7st be beautifull it also fits the peoples needs. People from Denmark trust each other almost as a family with no fighting witch helps create a Utopia. People do not judge other people. Also the government pays for healthcare and education. This helps create the overall idea for Utopia.
I think these are realistic in Dubai as well. I believe that any place can be an absolute utopia if the people thier try hard enough. In Dubai the people and its enviroment will be near perfect and will be a great surrounding. As for Denmark the people are good but the environment kinda sucks it is always cold and rainy.
That is why i beleive that Dubai can create the worlds first Utopia where nothing matters. And all the people care for each other and respect one another and also the enviroment. Witch will create Dubai as the first Utopia of the world.
Everyone would love to experience utopia especially. Utopia is when you want to get away and go somewhere nice and just is like perfect to you. Dystopia is somewhere you do not want to be and you do not like there they are both two different thing. Dubai is a place where everyone wants to be because it is the perfect place it has everything that a person would want. In Dubai you have one of the greatest hotels in the world. Also you can stay at the beautiful beach and go on a cruise around the ocean which would be the perfect thing ever. Now in the book you have this happening because Richard has gone to a beach that he wanted to go to because he didn’t like the camp. On this beach he thinks that everything will be the greatest but it really isn’t. Another thing in Dubai is you can go on a private island and stay there and that would amazing. Wouldn’t you love to go on a island with a group of people alone? That’s perfect the only bad thing that you have to worry about is the price. In Denmark it is the same thing just a little different. IN Denmark you have all of the islands and the gorgeous water and the hotels but just not as great as Dubai. Both of these places are utopias but Dubai is just a upgrade and Denmark is average. Denmark is a place where everyone would want to visit and explore it is a great place to live because you have everything that a person would want just like Dubai. Both of these places are realistic but just not to people from other places because they are not use to seeing such a nice places like these two. In the book right now Richard is having troubles with some people and on the beach he thinks that other people are there. He meets a guy that has been following these three. All of these people end up being friends and they end up having their little civilization on this beach. This relates to these two places because this beach is like a island that nobody knows about and there just having fun.

ReplyDeleteEveryone has a different perception of a utopia even though it has one definition of a "perfect place". Utopias are supposed to be perfect and worry free. Dubai is looked at as a utopia because of its beautiful beaches and grand hotels. Dubai is trying to make it self a utopia by building private beaches for people and they are always looking to the future to keep expanding.
ReplyDeleteDenmark is ranked #1 as the happiest place on earth for being friendly and nice. The trash man that was in the video was vary happy with his career choice and greets everyone he sees and is happy with everything he has. The other person shown in the video was a prince but he choose to be a carpenters apprentice and is not regretting it. I can see how Denmark can be seen as a utopia because of its good hospitality and they are friendly people.
